Dean steps in

Last updated : 15 December 2006 By Tony Scholes
Rotherham referee Howard Webb was scheduled to be in charge, but the change will now see Wirral official Mike Dean at the Turf for the first time since Easter Monday when he refereed the home game against Crystal Palace.

It was the other way round a couple of seasons ago, Dean had refereed our cup tie against Blackburn Rovers but was suspended before the replay with Webb taking over in the middle. On his return last season Dean was twice at the Turf, apart from Palace he was in charge of the Leeds game when he turned in a disappointing performance.

Other than that game, he hasn't caused us too many problems at all, although he was at the centre of the controversy at the Bradford & Bingley Pulse Flamingo Land Pension Fund Valley Parade Stadium four years ago when they ended the game with nine men, although it was still enough to rescue a point against us. He had the home manager ranting at him after the game, as he accused Dimitrios Papadopoulos of diving – as if!!

This season he's mainly been employed in the Premiership, and in sixteen games to date he's handed out no fewer than 54 yellow cards and four red cards. Away players have certainly come off worse, 19 of those yellow cards have gone the way of the home team players whilst 35 have gone to away team players.

Hermann Hreidarsson of Charlton is the only home player he's sent off. He saw red in a 2-0 win against Bolton, a game that later saw Bolton's Kevin Davies sent off. The other two players dismissed have been Stoke's Clint Hill in a 2-0 Championship defeat at Wolves and another Bolton player, this time Kevin Nolan who was not happy with him awarding Blackburn two penalties in their clash at Ewood. Nolan needn't have worried, they missed them both and Bolton won the game.

I was quite relaxed on Monday when I received the news that Webb was refereeing the game, I'm not particularly concerned at the change to Dean given his past Burnley games.

He will be assisted by Andrew Butler (Lancashire) and Bob Pollock (Merseyside) whilst David Foster (Tyne & Wear), a Football League referee in his own right, will be on fourth official duties.
