Dean back at Burnley after suspension

Last updated : 14 October 2005 By Tony Scholes

He didn’t get that replay, nor did he get another game all season after being suspended from officiating because of his involvement with a racehorse owners club. That suspension continued into the start of this season and he finally started to blow his whistle again at the end of August when he refereed Charlton’s 3-0 Premiership win at Middlesbrough.

He had a decent enough game back in Feb, apart from possibly he could have conjured up a dubious penalty in our favour and taking stronger and earlier action against Lily in the opposition midfield.

Overall we haven’t had problems with him in the past although Bradford City’s then manager Nicky Law would disagree after our 2-2 draw there in 2002 which saw two Bradford players sent off.

Dean used to have a reputation for going over the top with his cards but that hasn’t been the case in the last couple of years and again this season it has been a similar pattern, only five yellow cards in his last game between Arsenal and Middlesbrough have boosted his total to fifteen in six games.

Amazingly, and it is us who need to be the more careful, eleven of those yellow cards have been awarded to home team players and only four to away team players. We could do with a change there.

Overall this is not an appointment that we should be worried about, and there has been nothing suggesting any criticism of him since he returned form suspension.

One of his assistant referees will be Rob Lewis from Shropshire. Rob made a name for himself back in January when, running the line at Old Trafford he ruled out a Pedro Mendes goal, indicating that it had not crossed the line – our photograph seems to support that decision.

One the other line we’ll have David Richardson (Yorkshire) whilst fourth official duties will be carried out by Darwen based Football League referee Tony Leake who not too long ago had to deal with the shenanigans in the technical areas when we played Preston at Deepdale.
