Dean back, after a year

Last updated : 18 February 2005 By Tony Scholes

He didn’t get a lot wrong that afternoon but he could have done with blowing the final whistle a bit earlier than he did when we were 3-0 up and that would have avoided having to watch Ipswich hitting the woodwork at 3-2 before our late, late fourth.

The Wirral based Dean is considered to be a referee over keen to get his cards out but this season to date he is averaging less than three yellow cards per game. In 23 games so far he has given out 61 yellow and 7 red cards.

The number of red cards would have been less but he had a mad week in September that accounted for six of them in three successive matches. He sent off Stoke’s John Halls in their 3-2 home win against Ipswich and then followed that up with three red cards in the Premiership game between West Brom and Fulham.

Fulham’s Papa Bupa Diop was first to go, then Neil Clement of West Brom before Andy Cole departed to leave Fulham with just nine players. Having warmed up he then sent off Gary Breen of Sunderland and Sheffield United’s Andy Gray as the Blades won their home game 1-0.

There were appeals galore with Gary Megson and Mick McCarthy in particular far from happy. It has at least had the effect of reducing the number of red cards and the only once since was for Frederic Kanoute in Spurs’ recent 3-1 defeat at Bolton.

He’s not a referee that shows a bias to home team players when it comes to the yellow cards. Of the 61 this season 31 have gone to home team players, 27 to away team players and 3 more in the Community Shield.

He’s refereed Blackburn once this season, they were beaten 1-0 and three of the four yellow cards went their way – a repeat of that would be fine.

He will be assisted by R Burton and R Bone whilst the fourth official will be Premiership referee Chris Foy.
