Dean again for Leicester game

Last updated : 20 February 2007 By Tony Scholes
Davies, former assistant to Weary Whinger Craig Brown said he was keen to get the video to check out the referee's performance. It is only a couple of months since he was at Burnley, for the game against RK Sunderland. He was a late replacement for Howard Webb and at the time I wrote: "I'm not particularly concerned at the change to Dean given his past Burnley games."

Apart from one game against Leeds last season when he had a disappointing afternoon, he's never caused us any problems and against the Mackems in December he had another excellent game, and of his performance I commented: "We had a referee who got on with doing his job and let the players get on with theirs, looked to play advantage whenever possible and didn't want to steal the show. Well done to him."

He's added a few yellow cards since he was last with us and has now gone into three figures. In 31 games he's handed out no fewer than 107 yellow cards, with 46 of them going to home players and 61 to away players. He's also added another four red cards since December, taking his total to eight for the season.

Reading's Sam Sodje went in their 3-2 Premiership defeat at Manchester United, as did Birmingham defender Radhi Jaidi as they drew 2-2 in the FA Cup against Newcastle. More recently he sent off Heidar Helguson in Fulham's 1-1 home draw against Spurs and just three days ago ordered off Darren Moore as Derby went out of the FA Cup in that 2-0 defeat at Plymouth that so upset Davies.

Whether he will give us a penalty or not I don't know, but this is a referee who I more than expect to have a decent game and hopefully, as was the case last time, will let the players get on with playing football.

He will be assisted by Rob Martin (Yorkshire) and Andrew Butler (Lancashire) whilst the fourth official duties will be carried out by Rob Shoebridge (Derbyshire) who is in his first season as a Football League referee.
