Davis takes his place

He didn't just win the vote ahead of the other fourteen players, he simply walked it for his performances from the 1999/2000 season until he was released at the end of the 2002/03 season.

Davis, now the first team coach at Turf Moor, polled a staggering 50.8% of the vote; staggering due to the players he was up against in what was the biggest ever vote for a poll on Clarets Mad.

Such was the quality that Mitchell Thomas, his central defensive partner of those early years, received just 1.4% of the vote. So who were the players who came closest to him?

Loan player Gary Cahill, who was recently called up to the England squad, came second with 21.5% of the vote. His mentor John McGreal, a Burnley player from 2004 to 2007, was third with 12.7% of the vote.

Davis had returned to the Turf just six months before the start of the 1999/2000 season and captained the side to promotion, his third promotion as a player with the Clarets.

He was always the favourite to claim his place in the side but the scale of the victory shows just how highly rated he was with Burnley fans.

Less than four weeks ago our two central defenders turned in superb performances at Wembley and they did come in fourth and fifth in the vote. Clarke Carlisle had 6.8% whilst Steven Caldwell claimed 3% of the vote.

Davis therefore joins Brian Jensen, Michael Duff and John Harley in the team as we move on to look for a central defensive partner for Davis. That vote is currently underway and runs until the end of Monday.
