Many though that Davis had turned down an opportunity to play for Sunderland to take this role but of course it is Steve Davis Mark I and he has already been at Northwich for the last three years as player and more recently youth coach.

It is approaching sixteen years since Davis signed for the Clarets from Crewe after an initial loan spell and it was a transfer fee that supporters helped to fund after raising money for that specific purpose.

He was at Turf Moor when Steve Davis the snooker player was at his peak and so not surprisingly when he left he had made 147 league appearances. He was captain at Burnley but he moved on to Barnsley after we had failed to win promotion via the play offs in 1991.

After Barnsley (and a loan spell with York when he debuted against the Clarets) he signed for Oxford and was in their side for the last Turf Moor match of the last millennium when an Andy Payton hat trick saw us through to a 3-2 win.

At the end of that season he initially signed for Macclesfield Town but moved to the Vics without kicking a ball at Macc. Now retired from the playing side he has been part of manager Jimmy Quinn’s coaching staff and has stepped up with Quinn having moved on to Shrewsbury.

He takes over after a season in which they finished 14th in the Nationwide Conference.
