The news was announced today and Steve’s new role will see him travelling around the country watching both teams and players for the club. He will also help out with training and coaching.

Steve Cotterill said about the appointment, “We have taken Steve on as a scout to help and aid Cliff Roberts. Since he has been here, Cliff has done so much travelling and he needs help.

“Steve has been unemployed since he left York City and it is a great opportunity for him to be involved with a professional club again. He will also get the chance to do some coaching. He’s an experienced pro who knows the game well and he knows Burnley Football Club well. We welcome him back and wish him all the best in the role.”

Steve played the last of his 327 league appearances for Burnley, which came in three spells including a loan period in 1989, on the final day of the 2002/03 season having already been released by manager Stan Ternent.

Spells at Blackpool in the following season and York last season were injury hit just as his last couple of seasons with the Clarets had been and he was released by the Conference club during the summer and retired from the playing side of the game.

Without doubt, alongside Andy Payton, the most popular player of the 1990s at Burnley, the fans will very much welcome this appointment.
