David Unsworth will join the Clarets

The 33-yeaar-old Unsworth ended last season at Wigan, scoring the penalty that ensured they would stay up and his former club Sheffield United would return to the Championship, but it didn't win him an extended deal at the Concrete Jungle.

He was released in the following week and has been looking to get fixed up ahead of the new season. Rumours surfaced early this afternoon although a club spokesman confirmed there was nothing in it, however seeing him walking across the pitch ahead of the game was a decent enough clue.

Unsworth started his career with Everton but moved to West Ham during the summer of 1997 in a swap deal that saw Danny Williamson move to Goodison Park. He never really settled in London and wanted to return to Merseyside and after a year got his wish in a £3 million deal. He signed for Villa but within two months, and before the season started, moved again back to Everton for the same fee.

Since leaving Everton for a second time three years ago he's played for Portsmouth, Ipswich (during a loan spell), Sheffield United and finally Wigan and has now played over 400 league games.

He will be signing a one year deal with the Clarets, which Steve Cotterill confirmed after the game, and he said: "David is going to sign for a year and we are very pleased with that considering we have been light at the back.

"He will bring great experience and great strength to our back four. Looking back at what's happened today with Steven Caldwell's injury we are delighted to bring him in. Obviously he will be short of fitness and as you get older it gets harder.

"I'm sure when he is called upon he won't let his down. We may throw him in at the deep end on Tuesday night and hopefully he'll swim."
