David Holt dies

Holt was one of four signings by Brian Miller in the summer of 1980 following relegation to the 3rd Division for the first time in the club’s history. He signed from Oldham and joined Tommy Cassidy, Steve Taylor and fellow Oldham full back Ian Wood at Turf Moor as Miller looked to build a new team for promotion.

He was from Padiham but started his career with Bury before signing for Oldham in 1974. He was a left-back and that’s where he played in his first season but as we won promotion in 1982 he found himself in the centre of defence on a number of occasions alongside either Vince Overson or Micky Phelan.

He started the following season in the team but eventually lost his place, his last Turf Moor appearance coming in a 3-1 FA Cup win against Carlisle. The following Saturday he was in the side that was beaten 3-0 at Bolton and as Frank Casper took over from Brian Miller so Holt’s Burnley career came to an end.

He retired at the end of that season to concentrate on his business interests, namely David Holt Plastics in Rossendale.

Our thoughts are very much with David’s family and friends at this very sad time.
