Lynch, cousin of Chris who had been with the successful youth squad of 2008/09, won himself a professional contract with the Clarets at the end of his scholarship but was released at the end of the 2011/12 season after just one year with the development squad.

He's since played non-league football, most recently with Workington, but has now agreed a deal to play more locally with Clitheroe for next season, a decision that has delighted manager Simon Garner.

The manager said of Lynch: "I'm just glad to get it signed. David was my main target this summer, he's only a young lad but he adds a lot of experience that we don't have at the moment.

"I got in early, met the lad and I was really impressed with him. Fortunately he seemed to like what I said and he just wants to play football. He wants to play higher as well. He's got ambition, drive and I just liked the way he talked about what he wanted from his game and how he played."

Garner added of the 20-year-old: "I know he could go higher and he will go higher so to get him down here, it's a massive plus for the club, the lads that are going to play with him and for David himself because at th end of the day he's going to get games at this level, get more experience and get chances to show what he can do."

Lynch worked under Terry Pashley and Andy Farrell at Burnley, and asked whether that would be to Clitheroe's advantage, Garner said: "I really do to be honest, he really impressed me. He's got a really professional attitude, he still believes and still wants to play league football at some point in his career and I believe he can do that, it's happened with lads in the past from Clitheroe."
