Dave Kevan going back to Notts County

A move from the Championship to a team struggling in League Two at the time looked a strange one but Dave lived in Nottingham, was a former Notts County player where he started his career and his big mate Ian McParland had just been appointed manager and wanted him as his number two.

Burnley boss Steve Cotterill said at the time: "I think in the end that ended up being too big a pull. I could tell when we spoke that Dave wanted to go and I didn't want to confuse him.

"He is probably a different character to myself. He is a really good, honest citizen and a popular character. He is also a good coach and we mustn't overlook that and we are sad to see him go."

Dave worked under McParland and Hans Backe at Meadow Lane before taking temporary charge. That was until he was reunited with Cotterill five years ago with the pair taking County to promotion.

He was subsequently assistant to Craig Short but when Short was sacked, Kevan went with him.

Since leaving, he's worked at several clubs from Stockport, Hereford, back at Stoke who he left to join Burnley, and Cheltenham where he again linked up with Mark Yates with whom he'd worked at Turf Moor.

However, since November 2013 he's been assistant manager at Forest Green, working for Ady Pennock, a former Stoke colleague. However, yesterday, Pennock announced his departure.

He said: "It's a surprise but I couldn't stand in Dave's way. Dave has been brilliant for me in the year and a half I've been at Forest Green. I would like to thank him and wish him all the best."

Pennock confirmed he was moving to a Football League club but did not say which. However, it is Notts County and he was expected to become part of the staff under new manager Ricardo Moniz who had accepted the job.

However, Moniz, a former Spurs  coach, pulled out last night for family reasons but it is thought that will not affect Kevan's position and his return, which will be a popular one with the fans, is expected to be confirmed imminently.
