Danny's Disaster

Having lost 2-0 in Cardiff last Saturday the Welsh turned in a good performance and could well have picked up three points had they been able to put the chances away.

Coyne had done everything asked of him until he allowed a speculative shot to roll through his legs and into the bottom corner as the clock ticked down.

It was the same venue that saw David James give away a similar goal playing for England but unlike James it is not likely to cost Coyne the place he has just won in his national side.

Manager John Toshack looked dumbstruck as the ball nestled into the net but he said after the game, “The England keeper David James did something very similar in this same stadium earlier in the campaign and it cost him his position in the team.

"But we don't do things like that, I certainly will not be leaving Danny out. We are not as harsh on people as that. It is difficult for him because he is not playing regular first-team football for Burnley, but nobody is blaming him.

"The strikers should have settled it long before that incident."

He added: "Coyne was unfortunate, but we know which of the two keepers was the busiest over two matches, and it wasn't ours. But it is better to make these sort of errors now rather than 18 months down the line in a new qualifying tournament.

"Mistakes happen but it really should have been of no importance because we should have been out of sight by then."
