Danny's career at an end

Danny, who had his own web site before joining Burnley, has continued to make extensive use of the internet and four days ago posted a message that explained his current situation regarding the knee injury that brought his time at Burnley to an end.

He wrote: "I've been to DC and Miami since I came home in September to see different doctors and to get different opinions on my knee. Unfortunately all the doctors I've spoken with share the same thoughts in terms of the state of my knee, that another operation wouldn't guarantee anything but could possibly be a temporary cure.

"They said on top of that, another operation if I continue playing would be inevitable in a couple of years if that long. So already I am looking at two more operations at least to continue playing and horrible knee problems when I get older."

Danny goes on to say that as difficult as it will be to walk away from the game he has to take the most sensible option for his future but is grateful that football gave him the opportunity to meet so many people whilst taking him around the world.

He signed a two year deal with the Clarets in the summer of 2005, but left the club in August of last year. He'd been on the transfer list, and had a trial with AZ Alkmaar in July, but at the time he left manager Steve Cotterill made reference to the knee injury.

Today Cotterill has said: "I spoke to Danny not long ago and what seems to have happened is his knee has flared up again. We spoke about this while he was here. He is only a young lad and while he may have to give up football at an early age, he must not damage the knee for the rest of his life.

"He may have a family in a few years time and so long as he looks after himself now, he may be able to kick a ball with his kids. As disappointing and upsetting as it is for him, he has the rest of his life to contend with.

"I saw Danny during a few of his low points here and unfortunately he is now going to have to find a niche somewhere else, but we wish him all the best in that. I have yet to speak to him, but I will do and he knows he is always welcome over here any time if he wants to come and watch the lads."

Danny never did start a game for the Clarets, he made just six substitute appearances in a season that was hit badly by his knee injury. Everyone at Clarets Mad wishes him all the best in whatever he chooses to do.
