Danny Coyne is finally a Claret

Coyne has signed a three year deal with the Clarets and he has cost us £25,000, the second time Steve Cotterill has paid out a fee.

Welsh international keeper Coyne has been at the Walkers Stadium for a year after signing on a Bosman transfer from Grimsby where he was a massive crowd favourite. The Clarets were linked with him but opted for Brian Jensen as Coyne chose Leicester as understudy to England keeper Iain Walker.

The 30-year-old Prestatyn born keeper started his career on Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers and finally won his place in the side replacing Eric Nixon. He went on to play in 111 league games for the Birkenhead club before moving east to join Grimsby in the summer of 1999.

In four seasons at Blundell Park he missed just three games and became something of a fixture in the team but following relegation a year ago it was time to move on although Grimsby were very keen to keep him.

He chose Leicester and he played in just four Premiership games, incredibly three of them as a substitute. He twice replaced Walker following an injury and on another occasion came on for Paul Dickov after Walker had been sent off.

His only Premiership start was in a 2-2 draw at Bolton although he played a Carling Cup game and in three internationals for Wales.

Steve Cotterill joined the Leicester coaching staff in February of this year and was impressed enough with Coyne to target him when he took over at the Turf and today he became his third signing.

He won’t be in the side tomorrow but will link up with the Clarets on Monday having just returned from Leicester’s pre-season tour with Finland.

It was Leicester’s lack of a goalkeeper that held things up. Apart from looking for a replacement, Kevin Pressman signed yesterday, they have also been without Iain Walker who is just about to return to pre-season training having been involved in England’s Euro 2004 squad.

Cotterill said after completing the deal, “I am delighted to have him in the squad and it has taken a while to get him here. He is a terrific keeper and one that I earmarked to come in here, so we’re pleased to have him.

“We needed another keeper because we only had Brian Jensen before and Danny is an international who is fighting to be number one for Wales this season.”

Burnley fans should get their first glimpse of the new keeper next Thursday when we play Everton.
