Dad, now lad

He won his place in the Football League last season, the youngest referee on the list at just 22 years of age, and in January of this year he was allocated his first ever Championship game. That was our home game against Scunthorpe.

I don't think anyone could have had a problem with his refereeing that day. Both managers praised him and in our 'rate the Ref' feature he scored 91.0 which was only bettered last season by the performances of Uriah Rennie and Mike Thorpe in the away games at Preston and Bristol City.

His first season ended with 73 yellow and 6 red cards in 29 games. Of those yellow cards, 29 went to home team players and 44 to away team players whilst all but one of the red cards were given to away team players.

He refereed two more Championship games last season and tomorrow will be his first this season. He's already refereed three games in 2008/09, two in the Carling Cup and one in League One. His most recent game was at Ewood Park two days ago. There have been eight yellow cards in those three games with two to home players and six to away players.

There's no doubt that should he have a performance similar to that last January then we'll have absolutely no problem with him.

He will be assisted by Andy Newell (Lancashire) and Jock Waugh (South Yorkshire) whilst the fourth official will be Darren Handley (Lancashire).
