Dad is referee

Last updated : 28 December 2007 By Tony Scholes
Son Michael has been refereeing exclusively in the two lower divisions but dad Clive has already taken charge of six Championship games as well as refereeing our Carling Cup tie at Grimsby back in August.

He had a decent enough game at Blundell Park and received a 'Rate the Ref' rating on our message board of 76.28. It was a typical Oliver performance, he doesn't tend to cause you any problems but he's not a referee who allows the game to flow. You can expect to see him bringing free kicks and throws back a couple of yards etc. I've seen him insist on the ball being moved no more than a couple of feet at a free kick.

Strangely he's a referee who consistently cards more home players than away players. It is close this season only because of two games earlier in the season in which he carded four away players in each. It still leaves him with 21 home players and 18 away players, a total of 39 yellow cards, in 16 games.

No red cards. The last player he sent off was in February of last year when he dismissed Wycombe's Ricardo Batista in a 2-0 win at Wrexham.

Overall we shouldn't expect too many problems but could have ninety minutes of nit picking.

The assistant referees are Ken Haycock (West Yorkshire) and David Unsworth (Greater Manchester) with Iain Siddall (Lancashire) as fourth official.
