Cup goal wins award

Micah’s goal won all the Goal of the Season awards presented by the various Supporters’ Clubs after he became the first Claret to scored against Blackburn for almost twenty-two years when he scored the spectacular equaliser at Ewood.

But just six weeks earlier we were celebrating a big cup win against Champions League finalists Liverpool and the winning goal has picked up the BBC’s Best Own Goal of the Season Award.

We all remember how Djimi Traore tried to be clever in dealing with a cross and turning into his own goal and the BBC have described it as follows:

“The best OG of the season – or maybe the ‘worst’ if you are a Reds fan – came courtesy of Mr. Traore in an FA Cup tie.

“The scene: A chilly Tuesday night in January at Turf Moor which was warmed up by one of the deftest (or daftest) touches you are likely to see in this, or any other season.

“The defenders carefully watched a cross from Richard Chaplow. Then, slightly less carefully, he pirouetted and dragged the ball back with his heel into the net, condemning the Reds to an early cup exit.”

I think it has to be included as one of the best own goals ever scored on the Turf, made even better being the winning goal against Liverpool.
