Crouch goal not enough to lift us off the bottom

Last updated : 30 September 2014 By Tony Scholes

We'd gone down a place courtesy of goal difference following our 4-0 drubbing at West Brom on Sunday but a defeat of two goals or more would have seen Newcastle and their beleaguered manager Alan Pardew drop back to the basement.

They avoided that at least but the lasting memory of the game is of Pardew applauding the away fans who responded with a wave, of sorts, to their manager.

The Premier League table certainly hasn't settled yet. That win for Stoke lifted them from 17th place in the table up to 11th and on equal points to Manchester United who are now up to seventh.

That game provided us with one of the talking points, the red card for Wayne Rooney. Louis van Gaal appeared to defend his player but pundits had it right when they referred to the 'red mist'. Interestingly, Rooney has since apologised.

There were some good goals too over the weekend. Phil Jagielka scored a late equaliser for Everton in the Merseyside derby with a real howitzer from distance. I read some criticism of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet but I'm not sure what on earth he could have done about it.

The Everton defender claimed it was his best goal for a while. That's hardly a surprise given the last time he found the net was in April 2013.

With the Clarets not in action I took in Soccer Saturday prior to waiting for the All Ireland Hurling Final Replay. Chris Kamara was covering the Southampton v QPR game and came on to tell us that Charlie Austin's equaliser for QPR was 'Unbelievable Jeff'. He was back a minute later with an even more 'Unbelievable Jeff' with Graziano Pelle's winner for the Saints.

Take your pick. We debated it on the way down to West Brom but didn't come up with a definitive choice as to which was the better of the two.

There were some predictable events. Chelsea won and Diego Costa scored, and Manchester City continued their move up the table with a 4-2 win at Hull. Thanks there to Edin Dzeko who scored twice to give my struggling fantasy team (with Kieran Trippier and Jason Shackell in defence) a boost.

Arsenal drew the North London derby against Spurs and they and Chelsea are the only unbeaten teams in the league. The three most northerly clubs, ourselves and the two so called giants in the North East, remain the three still searching for a first win.

We're off to Leicester next. They've made a decent start and with David Nugent in their side we'll probably need to score twice to win. Now that would give the goals for column a boost.
