Cricket ground problems solved

The two grounds as they look today
They will continue to play at the current venue for the 2002 season but from 2003 wickets will be pitched next door as they move in and share with the football club. During this summer when work is carried out on the pitch there will be a special area in the centre laid with a synthetic surface that will be good enough to be used in the summer months as a cricket wicket even after a full season's football on it.

As soon as the 2002 cricket season comes to an end work will start on the redevelopment of the cricket ground following which a new two-tier stand will be built at that end of the football ground.

Although it will not be the biggest ground in the Lancashire Cricket League it will not be the smallest either as it will still be considerably bigger than the Rawtenstall ground. Not only that it will be possible to play under floodlights as and when required.

Cricket Club chairman John Heys was relieved everything had been resolved and told Clarets Mad Official, "We can only say that this is wonderful news for cricket in Burnley and for Burnley Cricket Club in particular. Apart from giving us a state of the art venue it will also secure the future of the club for many years to come."

Football Club chairman Barry Kilby was unavailable for comment but we were able to catch up with Chief Executive Andrew Watson who exclusively told us,

"This is great news and we are already looking at a higher priced double season ticket for both football and cricket. Supporters will then be able to keep their own seats all year round. The double season tickets will come with guaranteed membership of the Clarets Foundation for which £104 will be added at purchase time.

"There will be new merchandise available as soon as possible and the cricket club will have two choices of colour besides white for their kit and all three will be in the club's retail outlets soon.

"The cricket team will change all three kits every year to allow us to increase retail sales and this was cleared by Alan Beecroft of Colne Clarets at a hastily arranged Meet the Board session."

and then somewhat patronisingly added,

"Thank you for your support of Burnley Football Club".
