Crewe cool on Spicer

They made their move for Spicer last week and with Burnley giving it the green light, the former Bournemouth midfielder, who has not started a game since the end of last season, wanted the weekend to consider it.

Today Dario G said: “We tried to get John Spicer to Crewe on loan, but it seems that the player wasn't so keen to move after all. I think he also had a chance to go to Doncaster but nothing materialised there either.

“I am not actively pursuing John Spicer for loan now although it may resurrect itself once we are able to loan players in again. We will keep an eye on the situation but I do expect to get another midfielder in once we are able to loan players again and fully expect someone to come in over the next couple of weeks or so.”

The Crewe boss also claimed that Clarets' boss Steve Cotterill was also surprised at Spicer's reluctance to move. Cotterill had said the player was desperately seeking regular first team football somewhere.

Spicer's last appearance was as a substitute in the 2-2 home draw against RK Sunderland when he replaced Wade Elliott, but his last start was in the last home game of last season when he deputised at right back in the 1-1 draw against Luton.
