Coyne back in the Championship

Coyne was one of Steve Cotterill's early signings at Turf Moor ahead of the 2004/05 season but his stay at Turf Moor was blighted by two serious knee injuries. The first came at QPR in that first season, one that kept him out for six months.

Just back in the side in the following season he sustained a cruciate ligament injury in a home draw with Brighton that kept him out for well over a year.

Released at the end of the 2007/08 season he returned to his first club Tranmere. Danny had never suffered injuries prior to coming to Burnley and for the Prenton Park club he's played no fewer than 93 games in two years.

Now he's opted for a move to Middlesbrough. He will replace Ross Turnbull in the squad following his move to Chelsea and Coyne will act as cover for Brad Jones.

Manager Gareth Southgate said of him: "Danny is an excellent goalkeeper who will push for a first team place this season. He has played at the highest level with Wales and has great experience.

"Just as importantly, he is the right type of character in that he is very professional, trains well and has a real hunger to claim the number one spot. He played 40 games for Tranmere last season, kept 20 clean sheets and was probably the best goalkeeper in League One."

Coyne added: "Leaving Tranmere was a hard decision but joining Middlesbrough was a no-brainer for me. I came up and met the manager and goalkeeper coach Stephen Pears, saw the training facilities and made my mind up.

"I feel as fit as I've ever been so I'm coming here to push Brad for a first team place and do all I can to contribute towards us winning promotion."
