Council vote not unanimous

Recently Burnley Football Club issued a number of life bans including two to supporters who had been found guilty if racist chanting. At the time Clarets Mad applauded the clubs decision and as far as we are concerned the applause has not died down.

We were aghast at the comments of Burnley's BNP co-ordinator Stephen Smith when he criticised the club and asked for the bans to be overturned and hoped that would be the end of the matter.

This week the much maligned Burnley council voted on the following motion:

"This council applauds the stance of Burnley FC in taking action to ban people from matches for racial chanting. It believes that not to take such action would make nonsense of the club's backing for the 'Kick Racism out of Football' campaign.

"This council also reaffirms its previous pledge, and that of several of its former mayors, that Burnley has no room for racism and will fulfil its duty under the Race Relations Act to promote harmony and cohesion within and between the various communities of Burnley."

The motion was carried with just one abstention and none against. The councillor to abstain was the BNP's Carol Hughes whilst her two colleagues, David Edwards and Terry Grogan, were not at the meeting.

Clarets Mad will continue to support the club's anti-racism policy 100% and re-affirms its support to the club for the decisions already made.
