Cook took over in April 2007 and in his first season steered the club to sixth place in the Premier Division of the Eircom League and last season they did even better by finishing fourth.

That 2008 finish has seen Sligo qualify for the Europa Cup (previously UEFA Cup) thus bringing European football to the Showgrounds for the first time since 1996 when they were under the management of Steve Cotterill.

The club are just preparing for the new season and it is expected assistant manager Gerry Carr will take over on a caretaker basis.

This morning the club's PRO Dermot Brannigan said: "Sligo Rovers wish to announce the departure of first team manager Paul Cook by mutual consent. We would like to thank Paul for his contribution since joining the club and wish him well in the future. No further comment will be made by Sligo Rovers Football Club."
