At the time of his departure the club's PRO Dermot Brannigan issued a short statement confirming the departure, thanking him for his contribution and confirming there would be no further comment from the club.

Early last week it emerged that the supporters were trying to raise €60,000 to go towards the player budget in the hope of persuading Cook to return. That, and the sale of a player, have made it possible and last night a press conference was held to confirm the return of Paul Cook as manager.

Along with the fundraising they have also sold right back, and former Burnley trialist, Seamus Coleman to Everton. That money was originally budgeted for tax purposes but a restructuring of the club's finances have made it possible for it to be used to bring in two more players.

On his return both Cook and chairman Michael Toolan offered huge thanks to the supporters for the fundraising that has helped make the manager's return possible.

And so the Burnley/Sligo links continue for a club who, since 1995, have been managed by Steve Cotterill, Jimmy Mullen, Nicky Reid and Tommy Cassidy as well as Cook.
