Controversial Mason at Blackpool

Last updated : 03 March 2009 By Tony Scholes
This will be his first Burnley game, and I don't think I need to remind anyone that the other two were the home games against Preston in each of the last two seasons.

In the first of them he lost the game in the second minute when he failed to give the penalty for handball on the line, and by the end he'd incensed the home crowd with the most appalling performance that saw us end the game with nine men.

This season it was probably Preston's turn to be the less happy with him. They could had no complaints over the red card for Callum Davidson, but overall he did them no favours with decisions tending to go our way.

But the controversy does follow him round. Just over a week ago he was in the spotlight when his red card came out, this time though he most definitely got it right as he sent off Kevin Nolan for the foul on Everton's Nigerian Victor Anichebe.

Was he making the right decision just two days ago though when he awarded Sheffield United a match winning penalty in their home game against Birmingham? Alex McLeish became the latest manager to point the finger at him.

Almost half of his games this season have been in the Premier League. He's refereed a total of 25 games in which he's sent off seven players and yellow carded 85. Of those cards, two of the reds have gone to home players with five to away players, and 36 yellow cards have gone the way of home players with 49 to away players.

I suppose all you ask is that he has a quiet night at Blackpool, a night when he isn't grabbing the headlines.

He will be assisted by Jake Collin (Merseyside) and Mick McDonough (Tyne & Wear) whilst Football League referee Neil Swarbrick (Lancashire) will be on duty as fourth official.
