Connelly gets medal

Connelly played in the opening game of the 1966 finals against Uruguay before being left out and, along with 10 other players, missed out on his winner's medal because until 1974 only those playing in the final were entitled to one.

That rule has changed and now all the squad get medals and that can be done retrospectively. That should have happened last year but eventually the medals were presented before the former players went to Wembley for the Andorra game where they were presented to the crowd before watching the game from the Royal Box.

Connelly said: "It should have happened last year but there was a delay so it's taken until now for us to get our medals. We knew how things worked back in those days and I never thought about it to be honest. At the time I thought that Jimmy Greaves deserved his medal because he played a major role in that fantastic World Cup campaign.

"I know that some of those players who got the medals now keep them under lock and key but I want to cherish mine and then decide how I can keep it safe."

He added: "It was fantastic to be back at the "home of football" so soon after being there for Burnley's promotion to the Premier League. Me and my wife had to arrange to be picked up at Euston Station by someone from the FA because of the problems with the Tube. But no matter what, it's just great to receive my medal after all this time."
