Coleman back in love with football at Colne

The North West Counties Premier Division club confirmed his signing yesterday where he will join players such as Ed Williams and Chris Anderson, two other former Burnley players who are now with the Holt House based club.

Alex stood in as captain for our FA Youth Cup semi-finals against Blackburn in 2012 with Tom Anderson ruled out through illness but was captain of the development squad last season during a period when the team had three different coaches.

A year ago he was one of the young professionals selected to go to Ireland with the first team squad but, at the age of 20, he was released by the club having been with us from the age of seven.

He said yesterday that he'd fallen out of football because of how he felt he had been treated but on his decision to join Colne he said: "I spoke to my good friends who are playing at Colne and they said it was a great family club with a great set of lads, a lot of them I already know.

"They told me I'd enjoy my football again here, so I turned down offers to play in higher leagues and offers of more money by local rival clubs to play for an amazing manager (Steve Cunningham) who is very persuasive but honest, which is the main thing."

He'd led our under-21 team to the semi-finals in the inaugural season of the Premier League Under-21 Cup last season, scoring a late, late winner at Crewe in an earlier round, and his last public appearance for the Clarets came in that semi-final when we were beaten 3-2 by Manchester City on a night when our goals were scored by Cameron Dummigan and Jason Gilchrist.

Whilst out of love with football for a time, he's very definitely been concentrating on his other sporting love, that of cricket. He's been a regular this season in the Haslingden team in the Lancashire League for whom he's already accumulated over 270 runs including a season's best of 82 not out in a big win against their local rivals Rawtenstall in June.

Clarets Mad would like to wish Alex the very best at Colne.
