The red came on the opening day of the season when he dismissed Preston's Eric Skora in their 2-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace. Twelve of the yellow cards have been given to home players and twenty to away players and he has already carded two former Clarets this season in Neil Moore and Kevin Henderson.
He has never been a referee to make too much use of his card but the last time he took charge of a Portsmouth game he issued them with eight in a 4-3 defeat at Sheffield United.
His only previous Burnley game was just over a year ago on 23rd October 2001 when we beat Crystal Palace 2-1. He yellow carded Tony Grant and Gareth Taylor along with two Palace players but it was his treatment of Taylor that had the crowd against him.
Every time Taylor was in the action Clattenburg appeared to pull him up but he on the night he was a referee who was not prepared to allow the game to flow and would stop it at just about every opportunity.
This was a criticism of him throughout the last two seasons so it can only be hoped that he has changed his style and allows the players to play tomorrow.
