Clattenburg is back for more

Five weeks ago I wrote: "In truth I can find very little evidence to criticise him," when looking back at his previous Burnley games. I think it is fair to say I was made to eat my words as he completely lost the plot and by the last few minutes was waving his yellow card around so frequently I reckon a few supporters received them.

It was his first game back after a suspension brought about because of him dashing off from West Brom to see Ed Sheeran and also speaking to Neil Warnock, and I can certainly understand the latter.

Things haven't gone too well for him since. He's refereed two games in Europe and found cause to wave another eight yellow cards in the Champions League game between Shakhtar and Athletic Bilbao.

He's also refereed two domestic games and there has been controversy in both. In the Everton v West Ham game he incredibly missed Ross Barkley's diving and then failed to take appropriate action in the incident that saw James Tomkins go down clutching his face after being pushed in the chest.

Worse still was his handling of the Middlesbrough v Blackburn game, and his decision to award Blackburn a late equaliser has led to Aitor Karanka being punished for his comments. Quite how he allowed the goal to stand I don't think anyone will understand after the clearest of fouls on the Middlesbrough goalkeeper.

That was two weeks ago. He hasn't refereed since and arrives at Turf Moor in, shall we say, a run of poor form. We know Clattenburg loves to be the centre of attention, and that won't change, but hopefully he'll get back to some less controversial refereeing tomorrow.

The assistant referees are Simon Beck (Bedfordshire) and Jake Collin (Merseyside). The fourth official is Mike Jones (Cheshire) who himself was axed after a nightmare recently in the Southampton v Man City game. His last Burnley game was our 0-0 draw at Wigan last season.
