But he also refereed our Carling Cup tie at the same stage of the competition as we are now. The game was played on 22nd September last year when we lost at Barnsley and also lost Martin Paterson to a long term injury and saw Brian Jensen also stretchered off.
They seem to like giving him Burnley games in this round of the competition and three years ago he was the man in charge as David Nugent scored the winning goal with his hand for Portsmouth against us.
He's a well established Premier League and UEFA referee now and was in action in the Europa League game between Aris Salonika and Atletico Madrid last week on a night when he had Lee Probert, Kevin Friend and Michael Oliver in his team.
There have certainly been some disappointing performances from him at Burnley games over the years, but there have also been some excellent performances. I do think his problem sometimes is that he wants to be the star of the show, but I also believe we've a much better chance of getting a good performance than we would have with some of the referees we've had this season.
He used to be a heavy user of his cards but that does seem to have changed. Last season he crept into three figures but did referee 42 games to get to that total.
This season, in domestic football, he's refereed four games all of which were in the Premier League. Two of them have been at Chelsea with the others at Manchester City and Manchester United. There have been ten yellow cards in those games, five each to home and away team players.
HIs last game was Sunday's encounter between Chelsea and Blackpool at Stamford Bridge when incredibly he failed to award Chelsea a penalty in the last minute, instead, wrongly, opting to blow the final whistle. In that game there were three yellow cards for Didier Drogba (Chelsea) and the Blackpool pair Neil Eardley and David Vaughan.
We could do with a change of fortune with Clattenburg having lost the last four Burnley games he's refereed. And yet despite that, he sits in seventh place in the RATE THE REF table.
The assistant referees tonight are Scott Ledger (South Yorkshire) and Andy Newbold (Leicestershire). The fourth official sees a quick return to Turf Moor for Football League referee Eddie Ilderton (Tyne & Wear) who had the same role for our last home league game against Preston.game.
