Clarets to play Glentoran

Last updated : 07 May 2008 By Tony Scholes

Tommy Morrison, William Emerson, Glen Little, Paul Dixon and of course Jimmy McIlroy and Alex Elder - amongst the players who have worn the colours of both clubs, and now for the first time since 1997 the clubs will meet in a pre-season friendly.

It will take place at The Oval, Glentoran's home in Belfast on Thursday 31st July but as yet there is no kick off time confirmed.

This will be the fifth time we have met them in pre-season games in the last fifty years, starting with a game in August 1959 that was part of Elder's transfer to Burnley. We won that one 8-1 with goals from Jimmy Robson (4), Brian Pilkington, Ray Pointer, John Connelly and McIlroy.

We were there again two years later and again had a convincing win, this time 7-1 with the scorers Pointer, Gordon Harris (2), Ian Lawson (2), Jimmy Adamson and Connelly.

More recently we toured Northern Ireland in 1996 and 1997 and played Glentoran on both occasions winning the games 4-0 and 4-1. In 1996 Kurt Nogan (2), Paul Smith and Nigel Gleghorn got the goals whilst a year later it was Andy Cooke (2), Damian Matthew and Paul Weller.

This game takes our pre-season fixtures to six all of which are away. They are as follows:

19th July - Queen of the South
21st July - Partick Thistle
23rd July - St. Johnstone
26th July - Accrington Stanley
29th July - Bradford City
31st July - Glentoran
