Clarets to play Celta Vigo

Last updated : 25 June 2014 By Tony Scholes

The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and is one of three that the La Liga club, whose full name is Real Club Celta de Vigo, will be playing in England. On Friday 1st August they will face Norwich at Carrow Road and on the following day will play against Wolves, before travelling to Turf Moor for this Tuesday evening game.

They've just completed a second successive season in the Primera Division of La Liga having won promotion in 2012 and it was a much improved season. Having ended 2012/13 in 17th place they finished ninth this time round, their best performance since 2005/06 when they were sixth.

Celta's purple patch certainly came either side of the new millennium. From 1997 to 2003 they never dropped below seventh. They featured in the UEFA Cup on five occasions, three times making the quarter finals and, after a fourth place finish in 2002/03, qualified for the Champions League where they eventually went out against Arsenal in the round of 16, losing 5-2 on aggregate.

The most westerly of the clubs in La Liga, they are based in Vigo and play their home games at Estadio Municipal de Balaídos (pictured above), a ground they've used since 1928, five years after their formation.

Currently under Argentinean head coach Manuel Eduardo Berizzo they will be the first club from Spain to play Burnley since Malaga played out a 0-0 draw ahead of the 2005/06 season.

There are suggestions there could be one further home game ahead of the new season, to be played on Saturday 9th August, but as yet nothing has been confirmed.
