Clarets make offers for five players

Like his two predecessors, he's a manager who likes to keep his transfer dealing close to his chest but he has admitted that Scunthorpe's Martin Paterson is a player he wants and is one of the five players for whom an offer has gone in.

Coyle, who was back in his native Scotland yesterday at Tommy Burns' funeral, said: "As you know we always carry out our business in private but I think it is fair to say that Scunthorpe have confirmed our intentions regarding Martin Paterson.

"We are trying our best to bring him to Burnley and we want to agree a transfer fee with Scunthorpe. Basically that's where we are at this moment. Whether we re-visit the situation we will have to wait and see."

Coyle added: "We won't ever reveal in public how much we offer for a player, but if Scunthorpe say it is not enough then we can do one of two things. We can either increase our offer or we can turn our attentions elsewhere. He's a player I like. He's at a very good age and he's proved at this level that he can score goals."

The manager reiterated his desire to bring down the age of the squad. "As I've said before we are looking to try and bring younger players into the squad, players that are coming in need to be of a decent age.

"That is no disrespect to the players we've had before, but we're not in a situation where we are looking for a quick fix, a seasoned pro. We are looking more towards the long term."

"Paterson is not the only one," he added. "I've tabled offers for five players in the last fortnight. I won't get them all, but I'd like to think at least a couple of them will come off."

It is believed it would take a minimum of £750,000 to get Paterson and it is now widely believed the initial offer from the Clarets was in the region of £400,000. With a club with no need to sell and not wanting to sell it is likely to take an offer very close to that three quarters of a million to get him, if not more.
