Clarets linked with Whittingham bid

This morning's news suggests we've made an offer of £1.75 million for the 25-year-old midfielder who played seven games for Burnley during a loan spell in Steve Cotterill's first season as Burnley manager.

Then just 20, he made his debut on the night the lights went out at Dario G's Crewe and during his time at Turf Moor he played in the two cup ties against Blackburn. Unfortunately his loan coincided with our most difficult period of the season and a 2-1 win against Rotherham was our only victory in those games.

By then he'd lost his place in the Villa side after a good start and he was never able to re-establish himself there. He had a loan at Derby before eventually signing for Cardiff in a £350,000 transfer in January 2007.

Last season proved to be his best with the Welsh club, and he ended the season as joint top scorer in the Championship alongside Bristol City's Nicky Maynard with twenty league goals, albeit that was boosted for Whittingham as Cardiff's penalty taker.

Cardiff paid their tax bill yesterday with HMRC withdrawing the winding up order, but the debts are still high and Whittingham's been constantly linked with a move away and already this summer there has been a reported bid from Nottingham Forest.

Whether his destination is Turf Moor or not it does look as though he could be on the move before the beginning of the 2010/11 season.
