Clarets linked with two

Steve Howard
The first of these is Luton striker Steve Howard who turned down the chance to play Championship football earlier in the season when Nottingham Forest had a bid accepted for him.

The 28 year-old Howard has been with the Hatters for just about four years and in that time has scored a total of 84 goals including 78 in the league in just 159 appearances. His goals are going to see them to promotion and he has already hit 14 in the league this season although he has failed to score in the last seven games.

The Durham born player started his league career with Hartlepool United before moving onto Luton via Northampton Town and has already scored over 120 league goals in his career.

Given that he turned down Forest and that Championship football must be just round the corner with Luton it is hardly likely that he would choose to leave at the moment.

Martin Devaney
That’s not the case with a player Steve Cotterill knows all about, Cheltenham Town’s Martin Devaney. It was Steve who signed the Cheltenham born player after he had started his career with Birmingham and Coventry.

He’s out of contract in the summer, has said that he will be looking to play at a higher level, and Cheltenham have revealed they have received a bid from an unknown Championship club.

Devaney scored Cheltenham’s first ever league hat-trick and was voted man of the match in Steve Cotterill’s last game in charge in their play off final win at the Millennium Stadium in 2002.

He’s close on 200 league games for his home town club and is comfortable playing as a striker or in a wide position either right or left. He has played most of his games on the right hand side of midfield where he is considered to be at his best.

I wouldn’t have thought either of them fit the bill with the cheeky bids but Steve did mention a calculated risk.
