Clarets get Dean

Last updated : 17 April 2006 By Tony Scholes

The 37 year old Wirrell referee was involved (or in this case not involved) in the late incident that saw West Brom robbed of a clear penalty when they were trailing Arsenal 2-1, they went on to lose the game 3-1.

He didn't have the best of games either when he took charge of the home game against Leeds, although it is fair to say that he hasn't caused is major problems over the years. Probably his most controversial game involving the Clarets was the 2-2 draw against Bradford City at the Bradford & Bingley Pulse Flamingo Land Pension Fund Valley Parade Stadium when the home side had two players sent off and their manager Nicky Law accused Dimitri Papadopoulos of being a cheat.

This is Dean's ninth season as a Football League referee and for the last six of them he's been officiating in the Premiership. In this current season he's averaging three yellow cards per game, with 106 in 35 games, and has added nine red cards to that including two in a game twice.

The most recent of those red cards was to Tottenham's Michael Dawson in their 3-1 defeat at Newcastle, whilst he's also given marching orders this season to such as Duncan Ferguson, Nigel Quashie, Jason Roberts, Andy Cole and William Gallas.

Of those yellow cards 45 have gone the way of home players and 62 to away players but until recently there were more home bookings. However, 24 of his last 30 yellow cards have gone to away players. Only two of the nine players he has sent off were playing for the home team.

Hopefully he'll have a quiet game this afternoon when he will be assisted by Gary Kellett (Yorkshire) and Shaun Proctor-Green (Lincolnshire) and the fourth official duties will be carried out by Lancashire referee Neil Swarbrick who is in his first season as a Football League referee.

Swarbrick's first season card count is worth a mention – just 55 yellow cards and a couple of red cards in 28 games.
