He is the referee who has turned up on some important occasions in recent years, namely the promotion winning game at Scunthorpe and then the year after the 5-0 defeat just down the road.
This season he was soon getting his cards out and besides handing out four yellow cards in the Carlisle v York match he was quickly in action with the red cards sending off both Steve Livingstone of Carlisle and York’s player boss and former Claret Chris Brass after just 34 minutes.
But it hasn’t continued in that way and only Stoke’s John Halls in a 3-1 win at Watford and Adrian Forbes of Luton in a 4-1 home win against Stockport have seen his red card since.
In 23 games there have been 63 yellow cards and that average of less than three per game is certainly not considered high. We need to be careful though with the cards with only 25 of those yellow cards going to home team players and 38 to away team players.
His assistants at the Den will be Darren Deadman (Herts) and Mark Scholes (Bucks).
