Clarets dropping down money table

Last updated : 18 January 2007 By Tony Scholes

Although never one of the highest payers, the Clarets have all too often been too far up the league, but the figures for the last six months (July to December 2006) show that we've paid just £56,000 and that's less than eighteen of the clubs currently in the Championship.

That is only just over a third of the amount we spent over the same six month period during 2005, and that is against the trend. The second period in 2005 saw £3,741,886 handed over to agents by Championship clubs, that figure has increased dramatically to £5,489,599 over the past six months. There were a total of 731 player transactions of which 297 involved the use of an agent.

With Crewe gone, it is left to Colchester United to fly the flag with no agents payments whatsoever, whilst at the other end of the scale Southampton lead the way having spent over £800,000. Leeds had led the way a year ago but they've seen a dramatic drop to a figure not much higher than ours.

Compared to the near £5.5 millon spent by Championship clubs the figures are much smaller in the lower divisions with just over £500,000 spent by League One clubs and £220,000 by the clubs in League Two.
