Clarets confirm McDonald capture

He's another player who has been on Owen Coyle's wanted list for a while and today the deal has been completed with McDonald signing a three year contract with the Clarets.

It will come as no surprise to see him on the move. McDonald has been a much sought after player north of the border for some time and was the subject of a £75,000 offer from Celtic two years ago and more recently there's been interest from Liverpool and West Brom. But he stayed at Dundee and has now gone on to make over 100 first team appearances for the Tayside club.

He made his debut for Dundee in September 2005 whilst still 16, coming on as a sub in a League Cup tie against Hamilton and four days later replaced Jason Scotland to make his league debut against St. Johnstone.

Dundee accepted that it was inevitable he would leave last month when the Clarets had an initial bid turned down. At the time chairman Bob Brannan said: "We have refused an offer which does not meet our valuation. We do not want to rush into anything. The deadline for transfers is three months away and we will not be rushed into doing bad business."

And manager Alex Rae confirmed: "He will not be going cheaply. If we cannot get the fee he is worth, he'll be staying at Dens Park."

Rae spoke out ahead of today's deal being completed. He said: "It's always important for a club like us to generate revenue but in terms of the playing side it's a big loss. Last year he was the driving force for us and I think he's a fantastic talent who can go the whole way.

"I was getting phone calls from bigger clubs than Burnley and it's disappointing that the agent doesn't even bother weighing up all the options. I think it's a bit naive. I think the guy got a little star-struck and he's not doing his client any justice. I tried to explain that to Kevin's family but I think hands have already been shaken on the decision."

McDonald becomes Owen Coyle's second signing as he builds his Burnley side for the new season.
