The Clarets have held talks with midfielder Robbie Mustoe who was released by Charlton after just one season at The Valley during which he played just six first team games.

Now 34 the Oxford born player started his career with his local club but after quickly establishing himself in the first team he was sold to Middlesbrough in the summer of 1990 for a fee of £375,000.

In twelve years at Middlesbrough he was virtually a fixture in the team and he played in over 450 games for them before Charlton signed him on a free transfer a year ago. He didn’t see the season out though with the Addicks and left the club before the end of his one year contract.

He is moving back north and favours a move to Sunderland, they are a club who have said they are looking to bring in experience. But Stan will be trying to persuade him to make the move to Turf Moor.
