Clarets ban the cameras – what do you think?

Barry Hearn, Paul Scally and Delia Smith at the League's less than successful protest
Those were the words of Burnley chairman Bob Lord when the cameras rolled up to cover Burnley’s FA Cup replay against Bournemouth in 1966 and under Lord’s reign Burnley always had a rather uncomfortable relationship with the television companies.

That match was won 7-0 and eight years later he refused to allow another FA Cup tie at Turf Moor to be filmed, the 6th round tie against Wrexham, although on this occasion it was all because he thought the television companies were getting football on the cheap.

I wonder what he would think today and wonder what his reaction would have been to the collapse of the Football League’s contract with ITV Digital.

Yesterday the club returned to its Bob Lord style war when it announced that the ITV cameras were no longer welcome at Turf Moor and in an astonishing move the club’s Marketing Manager Edoardo Abis said,

"Due to the distress Carlton and Granada have caused us, we have taken the decision to ban them from entering Turf Moor. If they can come to some agreement with the Football League we would reconsider our stance.

"If all the clubs in the Nationwide League do the same then Granada and Carlton would have no programme to offer. Maybe then they would start to realise what they have done."

Have they done the right thing going out on a limb or not? To be honest I cannot make my mind up. I do think that Carlton and Granada are a disgrace and have said so on many occasions on this site. I also think the Football League have been pretty incompetent.

I do worry though that the powers that be at Burnley Football Club have become a bit obsessed with this. In the match day programme on Saturday it was referenced on several occasions, even on the community page. The club’s own web site seems to make daily references to it, far more than any other club has seemed to do.

Maybe it is time to follow Delia Smith’s lead at Norwich. Just as badly hit as Burnley she said that they would have to tighten their belts and get on with it and they have done just that.

So are Burnley right or wrong to keep going on about it? Do you think it is having an adverse effect on the atmosphere at the club or do you think they are right to keep it at the forefront?
