Clarets backtrack

Yesterday’s national press certainly made use of the story and Sky Sports News were running it throughout the day every twenty minutes or so with an interview with Stan himself.

Clarets Mad were inundated with mail from supporters both upset and angry. Many were upset at the thought of our best players leaving whilst others were angry at the timing of it all after most have committed to their season tickets. Certainly the view is that the club have scored a massive PR own goal with their supporters on this one.

However on local radio last night came the back tracking and suggestions that there was no real crisis but the club would listen to realistic offers for any of the players. That statement says nothing other than what is probably the case all of the time at most football clubs. There is no doubt that at any time we would expect the club to seriously consider any offers for our players that were considered good offers, even Leeds have had to do that.

So how on earth did this all get blown up in the first place. Sadly it looks as though for the second time in a week we have to look at the club’s own web site. Last week in an article that appeared under their ‘Breaking News’ banner they said that Marlon Beresford was to be the first signing of 2002/03 when in fact it was nothing but mere speculation and then a couple of days ago they broke this potentially shocking news under a heading of "I’ll have to sell" attributing the quote to Stan.

Within no time at all the quote was around the news agencies and Burnley Football Club were big news for the wrong reasons. The news even made it onto the front pages of other Football League club’s official web sites and gave supporters of these other clubs to have a go at us.

They say all publicity is good publicity but this news rocked the fans and apparently the players who knew nothing about it until they saw it in the newspapers over in the Isle of Man. Certainly we would be better out of the news than hitting the headlines in this way.
