Chester's Jones is referee

Last updated : 14 January 2005 By Tony Scholes

He was also in charge when we went to Cardiff towards the end of the season when he awarded the home side a penalty that changed the game.

Of all his Burnley games in the past he will always be best remembered for giving us one of those magical moments – he sent off Coventry’s Craig Hignett, who was at the time on loan from Blackburn, after he gestured at the assistant referee.

HIgnett then had some two thirds the length of the pitch to the tunnel with a Turf Moor reception that he’ll never forget.

Onto this season and Jones has made a reasonably quiet start with just nine yellow cards and one red card in four matches to date. The red card was given to a player who scored for the Clarets last season, Harry Ntimban-Zeh of Franchise. He went in the Carling Cup tie this week as Franchise went out with a 4-1 home defeat against Cardiff in front of just over 2,000.

What is no surprise with this referee is that seven of those nine yellow cards have gone the way of the away team players although his ratio last season was at little more even.

Tomorrow he will be assisted by David Foster (Tyne & Wear) and Kevin Mattocks (Lancashire).
