Charlton safe as Wigan make play-offs

St. Andrew's could be staging League One football next season

Wigan went into the game at Birmingham on the back of two defeats. After losing at Burnley on Easter Monday they suffered a surprise 2-0 home defeat against Blackpool last Saturday and that left them still in need of points to ensure they extended their season.

Those points came last night with Callum McManaman scoring the only goal of the game in the 3rd minute at St. Andrew's against Birmingham.

That meant Reading and Brighton are left to fight for the one remaining play-off place, with Sky immediately confirming they will show both their games live against the Clarets and Nottingham Forest respectively.

But the defeat for Birmingham has left them as the favourites for the drop with Barnsley and Yeovil but the incredible story for me is Charlton's escape. In the other game last night they beat Watford 3-1 at the Valley to ensure their safety.

When we beat them back in March I wouldn't have been too keen to put any money on them staying up, but incredibly they've won five of their eleven games since and are now guaranteed Championship football next season.

It's one of four now with Doncaster, Millwall and Blackpool all involved. Those three clubs have one, two and three points more than Birmingham who, should it come down to it, do have the better goal difference.

So, one day of games to go with just one play-off place and one relegation spot to be confirmed.
