Chappy heads south

The deal will go through this Wednesday when clubs in the Football League will again be able to bring players in on loan, and Chappy will be one of the first as he joins George Burley’s team on the south coast.

It was nearly very different and he was close to heading back to this part of the country last month but a loan deal with Preston fell through when he looked all set to join them in time to play against us. Now he’ll get an opportunity to play against us for Southampton when the home game is rearranged.

He’s not been able to break into the first team at the Hawthorns this season and three of his four league starts have come when manager Bryan Robson has named an under strength side against the top teams. He has played in a couple of cup ties and just two weeks ago he scored twice to put the Baggies 2-0 up in an FA Cup replay at Reading that they subsequently lost 3-2. They were his first goals for the club.

Robson said today about the deal, “I feel this move is important for him. He has taken a lot of things on board in training from what myself and Nigel Pearson have been asking him to do. Now it is time for him to put those things into practice in matches.

“Chappy hasn’t really got the experience at the moment for me to play him in Premiership games but I do think he can develop into a very good player. Going to Southampton and playing first team football is part of his development. Hopefully he will come back a better player.”
