Central defenders chosen

There was no doubt right from the start that Steve Davis was going to win a place in the side and that comes as no surprise. Davis has been hugely popular almost from day one at Turf Moor after being brought in from Southampton as a replacement for his namesake eleven years ago.

In the three and a half years he was away at Luton he was always afforded a wonderful reception from the Turf Moor crowd when he played against us but that was nothing compared to the reception he got when he played his first game on his return at New Year 1999.

It is fair to say that Stevie, Stevie Davis is the most popular of Clarets in the last ten years and this weekend has been a special one for him. Not only did he win a place in our team of the last ten years with 65.4% of the vote but he was also married last Saturday.

His central defensive partner is perhaps a surprise but recent memories are fresh in the mind and the place alongside him has gone to Arthur Gnohere. It would be no great surprise to see Arthur become the most popular player over the next ten years, the player who was crowned ‘King Arthur' after his two goal match winning performance at Deepdale last December.

Arthur's 11.4% of the vote was enough to push John Pender (9.6%) into third place when for most of the week Pender was running in second place. Signed from Bristol City in 1990 he became captain the year after when Steve Davis Mark One left and went on to captain the Clarets to two promotions.

There was absolutely no doubt that the Davis/Pender defensive partnership for Burnley was a good one for three years as the Clarets marched forward but after winning the play offs in 1994 he surprisingly lost his place to new signing Mark Winstanley. The promotion winning partnership was not brought back together though for this team.

The rest were some distance behind and current Claret Ian Cox won just 5.3% of the vote followed by Mitchell Thomas who picked up just 4.8% despite his two fantastic seasons. That left just Peter Swan with 2.7%, Jamie Hoyland 0.5% and Mark Monington with 0.3%.

Now we can move onto the midfield and we start with the right hand side of our midfield four. The voting poll is now there with six players to choose from. Next Monday we will take a look at the winner.

The team so far is:

Marlon Beresford

Dean West

Steve Davis

Arthur Gnohere

Lee Briscoe
