Cavanagh dies

Cavanagh was the oldest surviving Burnley manager, and it is almost twenty-one years since his time as Clarets' boss during the 1985/86 season. Following relegation Martin Buchan came in to replace John Benson.

It was Buchan who brought Cavanagh to the club, they had been at Manchester United at the same time, but when Buchan decided to call it a day after just eleven league games, Cavanagh took over and remained in charge for the rest of the season.

It was a disappointing season, one that saw such as Wayne Biggins, Kevin Hird and captain Vince Overson all leave the club, and one when we never threatened to win immediate promotion. Cavanagh's only permanent signing was that of former Burnley striker Derrick Parker who was signed from Oldham.

His time at Burnley came to an end at the end of that season and he was replaced by Brian Miller who returned to Turf Moor after an absence of just over three years.

Our thoughts at this time are with Tommy Cavanagh's family.
