Carlisle led the way at St. Mary's

Clarke Carlisle
Carlisle was described this week by manager Owen Coyle as the best right sided central defender in the league and he turned in one of his best performances in a Burnley shirt against a Southampton side who earlier in the season had found scoring goals against us a not too difficult task.

He was an easy winner in both and took the man of the match award with 35.3% of the vote. Brian Jensen's two saves in the second half, and in particular the one right at the end, earned him second place with 22.7% whilst 12.3% of the vote was enough to see Carlisle's central defensive partner Steven Caldwell take third place.

The two central defenders were the top two in the player ratings. Carlisle's rating of 8.92 out of 10 gave him first place whilst Caldwell had a rating of 8.17 to take second place. Ade Akinbiyi, who turned in as good a performance as I've seen from him surprisingly only picked up a total of one point and that came from his third place in the player ratings. His rating was 7.75 out of 10.

It all means that Wade Elliott at worst will now be our Joint Player of the Year. With a maximum of six points to be won for each game he now sits twelve points clear with just the two games left. It will take two vintage Robbie Blake performances to prevent him taking the title outright.
