Writing in the match programme for the Spurs game, Caldwell, who joined the Clarets in January 2007, claimed the club had to do something to improve things.

"There are some things behind the scenes that are sub-standard and everybody knows that," he said. "Anyone who takes a tour around the changing and physio facilities here at Turf Moor would realise that.

"We are working with standards that should be better and are frankly not good enough and I hope they get improved. The work is quite drastic, but it needs to be done and it will make this club so much more prepared and inviting to come and join from a playing perspective.

"The training ground also needs investment and in my opinion the players need an eating and changing facility worthy of the club's name. This is where the money comes in and I don't feel we are talking about a huge amount."

Caldwell went on to praise the fans and ended by saying: "This has been a phenomenal stadium to play at and a real highlight in my career. It has been a privilege and an honour to captain this great football club."
