Caps for past and present Clarets

A substitute appearance for Danny Lafferty

The first of them was David Edgar, who remains a Burnley player until the end of this month. He was in the Canadian squad that travelled to Austria to play two games in Ritzing against Bulgaria and Moldova.

He won his 23rd cap when he played the first of them against Bulgaria a week last Friday but was not in the squad for the Moldova game four days later. That total of caps, 23, all with Burnley, has equalled the number won whilst playing for Burnley by Leighton James. Only four players have won more as Burnley players; they are Alex Elder, Billy Hamilton and Jimmy McIlroy (all Northern Ireland) and James' Welsh colleague Brian Flynn.

Cameron Howieson won his eighth cap for New Zealand on Friday in a 0-0 friendly draw against South Africa in Auckland. He came on as a 75th minute substitute for Andrew Durante and in doing so played his first international in New Zealand with the previous seven having been played in America, the Solomon Islands, China, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

It was cap number 9 for Danny Lafferty and a 65th cap for Chris Baird in Northern Ireland's 1-0 defeat in Montevideo against Uruguay. Baird played the full 90 minutes but Lafferty was an 80th minute substitute for Newcastle's Shane Ferguson.

Gary Cahill was in the England line up for their 3-0 win against Peru who did not include Diego Penny in their squad, the former Burnley goalkeeper having last played for his country in October last year.

England won the game 3-0 with Cahill claiming his third goal for his country when he headed home the second. He'll certainly provide some interest for Burnley supporters in the World Cup which gets underway in two weeks.

Cahill will be the only ex-Claret involved in the tournament although there was some excitement recently at a potential place for Dimitrios Papadopoulos in the Greek squad.

Our former striker played his 22nd, and what was expected to be his last, game for Greece in August 2007 but then received a shock call up last September for a World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein.

He got onto the pitch for the last six minutes and then made another substitute appearance in a friendly against Korea Republic in March, this time playing just over half an hour.

He was named in the provisional squad but did not make the final 23 and was not included in last night's friendly against Portugal in Oeiras, near Lisbon which ended in a 0-0 draw.

The INTERNATIONALS feature has been updated with all but Baird's cap. We are still compiling the games in which he's featured for Northern Ireland.
